Aston Villa sack Alex McLeish after disappointing season

“The most immediate action that we can take is to look carefully at our options in terms of bringing in a new manager,” says owner Randy Lerner.

AS MANY ASTON VILLA fans demanded, Alex McLeish has been sacked this afternoon.

The decision from owner Randy Lerner comes less than 24 hours after the completion of the Scot’s first season in charge at the club.

“We need to be clear and candid with ourselves and with supporters about what we have lacked in recent years. Compelling play and results that instil a sense of confidence that Villa is on the right track have been plainly absent,” said Lerner.

“The most immediate action that we can take is to look carefully at our options in terms of bringing in a new manager who sees the club’s potential and embraces our collective expectations.”

The former Birmingham boss was up against it from the beginning. But after a season in which he had to contend with the long-term absences of Richard Dunne and Darren Bent as well as skipper Stylian Petrov battling cancer, he led the club to safety with a mere two points to spare.
