Former Cork City manager Noel O’Mahony dies aged 73

He passed away after a brief illness.

THE DEATH HAS taken place of former Cork City manager Noel O’Mahony after a brief illness.

O’Mahony, 73, started his career with the Cork Hibernians in the 1960s.

He won a league medal with the club in 1971 and followed it up with two FAI Cups in ’72 and ’73.

As manager, he led Cork City to two FAI Cup finals in 1989 and 1992 before claiming the league title in 1993.

O’Mahony, who grew up in Ballyphehane close to Turner’s Cross, will be remembered with a minute’s silence before tomorrow’s FAI Ford Cup clash between Blarney United and Derry City at O’Shea Park.

In a statement released by the FAI this evening, Chief Executive John Delaney said:

“Noel was a great footballer who contributed a lot to our game on the field and as a manager.

He will always be a remembered as a legend of Cork football and will be sadly missed.”
