IRELAND’S JENNIFER LEHANE, Martin McDonagh, Daina Moorehouse and Aidan Walsh are all one win away from securing Olympic qualification after a brilliant set of results at the final qualifier event in Bangkok.
Lehane defeated Anastasiia Kovalchuk of the Ukraine in the 54kg category which puts her within touching distance of qualification.
The 25-year-old southpaw Lehane earned a split decision victory and will fight Hungary’s Hanna Lakotar tomorrow for a seat on the plane to Paris.
McDonagh is also closing on the Olympics after a 5-0 win in his 2nd Olympic World Qualifier last 16 bout against Bulgaria’s Peter Rumenov Belberov. He will meet the winners of the bout between Armenia and Iran.
Moorehouse has booked her place in the quarter-final of the 50kg class which means she is also one win away from sealing her place at the Olympics. The 22-year-old earned a unanimous 5-0 win over Aylin Jamez from Guatemala.
The Enniskerry fighter will now progress to face Bulgaria’s Zlatislava Genadieva Chukanova in the 50kg quota bout tomorrow.
And finally, Walsh will aim to become double Olympian on Sunday after a unanimous decision victory over Cuba’s Jorge Cuellar. The Tokyo bronze medalist is hoping to win a four-man box-off this weekend to book his ticket to Paris after two point deductions cost him in the final Olympic qualification tournament.
Walsh will contest his last second Olympic World Qualification bout on Sunday against Angel Gabriel Llanos from Puerto Rico.
Gráinne Walsh, who sealed her place in the 66kg quarter-finals with a win on a Friday, will face Armenia’s Ani Hovsepyan for an Olympic place on Sunday.
