Down star 'on the mend' after sustaining head injury in action for St Kilda

Clara Fitzpatrick has been excellent in her debut AFLW season.

AUSSIE RULES SIDE St Kilda have offered an update on Down star Clara Fitzpatrick after she was stretchered off during their clash with Adelaide Crows on Sunday.

Fitzpatrick showed incredible bravery to make a superb mark in the final quarter, but was met with heavy contact before hitting her head off the ground.

There appears to be no season-ending immediate damage, according to the club.

“Clara Fitzpatrick is on the mend after being stretchered off the ground late in yesterday’s match,” St Kilda tweeted last night. “Get well soon, Clara!”

The club also told Channel 7 during the game that she was being treated for concussion, so it is likely that she will now miss their round three clash with Melbourne FC on Friday.

Fitzpatrick had been excellent for St Kilda in their meeting with 2019 champions Adelaide, but the Crows produced a massive fourth-quarter comeback to bag a 13-point victory; their first win of the 2020 season.

Clare’s Ailish Considine kicked her first goal of her second season at Adelaide.

30-year-old Fitzpatrick is impressing in her debut AFLW campaign, after she was elevated from the Southern Saints Victorian Football League Women’s [VFLW] – the AFLW’s second string — list in the off-season.

Congratulations to Aisling McCarthy, Western Bulldogs who is our AFL Ireland Women’s IRISH PLAYER OF THE ROUND, for the second straight week in a row, after this weekend’s Round 2 of AFL Women’s 2020 👏 👏 Aisling had another massive game playing in midfield racking up 15 disposals, including a mammoth 8 tackles, & was amongst Bulldogs best despite going down to Melbourne Demons. Next up we have Aishling Sheridan who had a super game for Collingwood, collecting 14 disposals including 3 Marks, much to the delight on an early rising Sheridan household in Mullahoran, and many other footy fans who tuned in to watch in Ireland. Despite finishing on the same ranking points as Katy Herron, Aishling gets the nod for the number 2 spot due to that first ever AFL Women’s Goal. Herron appears in the Top 5 for the first time after an impressive shift also for the Bulldogs, the highlight of which was 6 tackles showing she is quickly adapting to the physical side of the game. Back in the Top 5 for the second week running is Orla O’Dwyer, who is flying it at Brisbane Lions and fitting seamlessly into the team and the Lions fast running style of play. Rounding out the 5 we have Sarah Rowe, Collingwood who impressed with 12 disposals and already looks more comfortable on the ball in her second season at the Magpies. There was a notable injury to Clara Fitzpatrick, St Kilda who had to be carried from the field after one of the bravest plays of the season so far where she ran backwards against play with the flight of the ball to make a mark but was met with heavy contact. As a result Clara will likely sit out Round 3 & we look forward to seeing her back in action in 2 weeks time. Ailish Considine, Adelaide, got her first win of the season & her first goal on the board for 2020 in a come back win over St. Kilda. Niamh McEvoy had a great weekend with another proud Irish dad presenting her with her Guernsey, then she went on clock up a debut win. Sinead Goldrick was also part of the Demons team that collected the Hampsom-Hardeman Cup. And Kate Flood asked collected silverware as Freemantle Dockers overcame the Eagles in the first Western Derby We cannot wait for Round 3💪
