It's official! Ireland rise to 8th in world rankings after heroic World Cup run

Graham Shaw’s Green Army have powered from 16th to their highest-ever ranking.

The Green Army entered the tournament ranked 16th in the world but after historic wins over the US and India in the group stages and dramatic penalty shootout successes over India again and Spain in the quarter and semi-finals, they’ve powered up eight places.

The Netherlands remain the world’s best team — a position they have held since 2011 — following a 6-0 victory over Ireland — whose previous highest ranking was 14th — in the final. It was their eighth World Cup title.

England remain in second following their sixth-place finish on home soil, while Australia jumped to third. Spain, bronze medallists in London, move to seventh in the rankings.
