Irish midfielder Darron Gibson signs for Championship side Wigan on short-term deal

Gibson will link up with former Sligo Rovers boss Paul Cook at Wigan.

IRISH MIDFIELDER DARRON Gibson has signed a short-term contract with Wigan Athletic, the Championship side have announced.

The 30-year-old left his previous club Sunderland in March by mutual consent.

He had been placed on suspension by the club on 18 March, the day after he was charged with driving with excess alcohol having been involved in a road traffic accident near Sunderland’s training ground.

He was later spared a prison sentence despite admitting to a drink-driving offence.

Speaking about the club’s latest signing, Latics manager, and former Sligo Rovers boss Paul Cook said:

“Darron is a talented footballer, who has played at the highest level and is a good addition to our squad.”

Gibson joins a Wigan side who were promoted from League One last season. He previously played with Manchester United and Everton before joining Sunderland in January 2017.

The Derry native has been capped 27 times at senior level by the Republic of Ireland.
