The ex-Drogheda, Shelbourne and Galway defender, who most recently plied his trade with NIFL Premiership side Glenavon, shared the news on Twitter this morning.

Foley, who’s had a lengthy career in the League of Ireland, wrote:

“So the time has come to hang up my boots professionally.I’ve been lucky enough to have had options for the start of this season but unfortunately I cannot commit to these contracts.

I’d like to thank everyone who has left an impression on my footballing career, from my first manager Billy Hunt at Home Farm for 10 years to Gary at Glenavon for a short spell. My teammates and opposing player’s [sic], I’ve met some nutters along the way haha, but I don’t think I have a bad word to say about anyone, one massive bunch of gentlemen in Irish football.

Finally, my family, Jim, Marian, Melanie and Gillian. The amount of sacrifice they have done for me over the many years is remarkable. I can’t thank them enough. I think the first session Jim missed was when I moved to Glasgow.

Anyway, thank you all for everything over the years, hopefully get out to a few games soon.

Thanks again, Eric.”

The Dubliner first started out in the Home Farm youth system before making the move to Celtic’s underage ranks in 2006.

After four years in Glasgow, he returned home to Sporting Fingal and made the switch to Shelbourne in 2010. There, he was a key midfielder that season, scoring six times in 18 appearances.

Onward he went to Monaghan United and made a big impact there before heading to Drogheda United in February 2012.

It was a mixed stint there — he was a regular starter as the Louth side finished second in the Premier Division that year but injury hampered him from there.

In 2014, he left the club by mutual consent and spells at Athlone Town and Galway United followed.

Earlier this year, Foley signed for Glenavon, making the move from Glentoran.
