SHANNON RFC WILL make history next week as they field the first-ever U20 women’s team in the country.
The Limerick outfit will take on the University of Limerick junior team next Wednesday week in Coonagh, in what will be an historic affair.
Their senior side compete in Division 1 of the Munster Women’s League, alongside Ballincollig, Thurles, Bandon, Fermoy, St Mary’s, Richmond, Tralee and Youghal.
Of late, there have been calls for an Ireland U20s side and this move may be the start of something bigger.
“If you look at other nations like England, France, Wales, they all have U20 sides. It’s preparing the girls for an international structure and exposing them to that level of competition.
“The talent is there and the girls are extremely eager. I think it could potentially make for a better structure.”

They posted a statement on their social media accounts:
“We are delighted to announce that on November 29th, Shannon Girls will make history as we field the first ever U20 team in Ireland.
“This is a massive step in the development of women’s and girl’s rugby and we are delighted to be welcoming UL Wolves Junior team to Coonagh for what will be a historic occasion.
“We are delighted and excited to be the first club in Ireland (to) put out an U20 team and we hope to build on this going forward.
“Come along and support the girls on the night, kick-off 7.30pm Wednesday 29th November in Coonagh.”

“The one big thing for me would be to have an U20 side,” Ireland international Sophie Spence told RTÉ Sport in the aftermath of this year’s World Cup.
“If you look at other nations like England, France, Wales, they all have U20 sides. It’s preparing the girls for an international structure and exposing them to that level of competition.
“The talent is there and the girls are extremely eager. I think it could potentially make for a better structure.”
