Joe Canning rounds off a stunning 2017 with Hurler of the Year award

Canning is the first Galway man to claim the honour since the late, great Tony Keady in 1988.

JOE CANNING HAS been named Hurler of the Year at the PwC All-Stars tonight.

Galway ended a 29-year wait for the All-Ireland title in September, and Canning played a key role in his county’s march to the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

It was voted on by his peers and he was presented with the award at the awards ceremony which took place at Dublin’s Convention Centre tonight.

Canning is the first Galway man to claim the honour since the late, great Tony Keady in 1988. He was presented with the award on stage by Keady’s daughter Shannon.

The Portumna attacker was named at centre-forward on the All-Star team – his fifth All-Star in total.

Earlier tonight, Canning’s teammate Conor Whelan was named Young Hurler of the Year.
