THERE WAS TO be no fairy tale finish for team Ireland at the Rowing World Championships, as Sanita Puspure claimed fourth in the women’s single sculls final.
The 34-year-old was unlucky not to collect the bronze medal in the end, but despite a strong sprint-finish, she was pipped at the line by Austria’s Magdalen Lobnig by just .35 of a second.
Switzerland’s Jeannine Gmelin came home in first place, with Vickey Thornley of Great Britain taking the silver medal.
Puspure looked comfortable between fourth and fifth place in the early stages, as Thornley edged into the lead.

The 34-year-old was firmly in fourth place at the 900m mark, but the leading boats were starting to leave the chasing pack behind.
Puspure, who was in lane four, tried to stay in touch but the gap was starting to widen as they came into the final stretch.
Having failed to qualify for the final at the Rio Olympics, this is a brilliant result for Puspure, but she will be disappointed to come so agonisingly close to a podium finish.
Cork-based Puspure qualified for the final after claiming second place in her semi-final on Friday behind first-placed Gmelin.
