Rory Gallagher linked with return to inter-county management

Rory Gallagher just recently stepped down from his position with Donegal.

RORY GALLAGHER COULD be set for a return to inter-county management, after being linked with the vacancy at Fermanagh.

Gallagher stepped down from his position with Donegal in July, after three seasons at the helm.

He guided them to consecutive All-Ireland quarter-final appearances in 2015 and 2016, before Galway inflicted a 4-17 0-14 hammering on them in the qualifiers this season.

Meanwhile, Pete McGrath departed the Fermanagh seniors this summer, just one week after the county board announced that he would be staying on for a fourth year.

Gallagher is a native of Fermanagh and according to sports journalist Declan Bogue, he could be in line to take over from McGrath.

Bogue told the We Are Ulster podcast that several names have emerged as candidates for the position, including former All-Ireland winner Paddy McKeever of Armagh, and Tyrone U17 manager Collie Holmes.

But Gallagher is apparently a front-runner for the job at this stage.

“One thing that pretty much is confirmed to me was that Rory Gallagher is said to have met the selection panel, including the county chairman Greg Kelly.

“So it’s interesting times. If that’s the only person they’ve met and they’re happy with it, and he’s happy with it, it would be quite unexpected.

I would have thought it was be unexpected for Rory Gallagher to come back and be Fermanagh manager just maybe at this stage of his managerial career. I’d have thought he would want to take a year out. But stranger things have happened.

“Rory hasn’t been in Fermanagh since his early 20′s. You can’t even talk about him as being a home-grown manager but some people sometimes like to see a man from their own county in charge of their own county.”
