FOR THE THIRD time in little over a year, the NFL has a new highest-paid player of all time.
This time the man walking away with the bags of cash — $135 million over five years with $92 million guaranteed to be exact — is Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The $27m per year deal surpasses the $25m deal inked by Derek Carr with the Oakland Raiders earlier this summer and Andrew Luck’s $23m contract with the Indianapolis Colts that was signed in 2016.
It’s unlikely that Stafford will hold the title as the highest-paid player for very long, however, as Arron Rogers and Matt Ryan are due new contracts soon and one of them could easily become the first $30m per year player in the league.
After a disappointing first season, Stafford has thrown for a least 4,250 yards and 20 touchdowns in each of the five years since.
In a league where above average quarterback play is at a premium, it’s no surprise the Lions have kept hold of their franchise player.
