Those 500km round trips too much for Banty as he departs from Wexford

“I’d leave my house at 3pm to head to training and I wouldn’t be back again until midnight.”

WEXFORD MANAGER SEAMUS ‘Banty’ McEnaney confirmed his departure today after just one season in charge.

The Monaghan native said the distance he had to travel for training was the major reason for his decision to step away.

He commuted from Carrickmacross to Wexford’s base in Ferns during the 2017 campaign, where he guided the Model County to promotion to Division 3 before a disappointing championship followed.

“It was a 500km round trip,” he told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland today. “I’d leave my house at 3pm to head to training and I wouldn’t be back again until midnight.

“The driving was the single biggest reason because the county board and the players were top class. We had whatever we needed and the respect, commitment and attitude of the players couldn’t be questioned.”

The Wexford hurlers enjoyed a high-profile run to the Leinster final under the guidance of Davy Fitzgerald but ‘Banty’ says the football squad wanted for nothing during his tenure.

“Sometimes in a dual county one of the codes feels like they are missing out, but I can guarantee you we got everything that the hurlers got this year.”

He also revealed he would take some time out before reassessing his future.

“Football and GAA is like a disease, I’ve no immediate plans.”
