Donegal's Magee siblings power into last 16 at World Championships

The pair – who have made history this year already – defeated Japanese opposition to progress in Glasgow.

DONEGAL SIBLINGS SAM and Chloe Magee have booked their spot in the last 16 at the at the 2017 World Championships in Glasgow, following a sensational win earlier.

After defeating US pair Yuko Kawasaki and Yan Tuck Chan yesterday, they were pitted against Japan’s 16th seed duo Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino.

The Magees produced a stunning display to win 21-13, 16-21, 21-15, the Irish siblings clocking nine unanswered points in the deciding final frame to overcome the Japanese pair, who are ranked 22nd in the world rankings.

In their last 16 clash, the Magees will face either Vietnam’s Min Hao Tseng and Ling Fang Hu, or the world number three pair of Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia.

The duo made history in April, as they won Ireland’s first-ever European badminton medal, returning from Denmark with bronze.
