Ward joined Burnley from Wolves, following a season-long loan spell at Brighton, after Burnley had won promotion to the Premier League in 2014.
Injury meant the defender was restricted to just nine appearances in his first season with the club and he again had to be patient at the start of the following campaign.
But the defender’s return coincided with an unbeaten run to the end of the campaign as Sean Dyche’s side bounced straight back to the Premier League as 2016 Championship winners.
Burnley give Irish international Ward new contract until 2019
IT HAS BEEN some couple of days for Stephen Ward.
On Saturday he scored a stunning goal to help Burnley beat defending champions Chelsea 3-2 to open their Premier League campaign.
This morning he was named in Martin O’Neill’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Georgia and Serbia.
And this afternoon he agreed a new deal with his club that will keep him at Turf Moor until June 2019, with the possibility of a further 12 months.
The 31-year has been with the club since 2014 and, in a statement on the club website, said:
