SCANS HAVE REVEALED that Johnny Sexton played the Lions’ third Test match against the All Blacks with a broken wrist.

He picked up the injury in the second test victory in Wellington and strapped his wrist up to battle through the pain for the series decider, according to Ruaidhri O’Connor of the Irish Independent.

In the first half of that match, the Irish out-half then ruptured a tendon in his ankle. He was strapped up by the tourist’s medical team and played on before being replaced with seven minutes remaining on the clock.

In the aftermath of the 15-15 draw, the Leinster man underwent scans which revealed a broken bone in his arm.

Sexton’s wrist is expected to heal in time for his pre-organised delayed return and surgery is not required for his ankle, meaning his pre-season is unlikely to be overly affected.

This will come as welcome news to both Ireland and Leinster fans, and provincial head coach Leo Cullen, who has been hit with a string of injury worries and absentees as of late.
