Capri stuns the field to win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby

It was a third win in this race for jockey Seamie Heffernan, and a 12th Irish Derby victory for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

CAPRI PRODUCED A surprise display to win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh on Saturday.

After coming sixth in the Epsom Derby, Capri fought off the efforts of the race favourites including Craksman and Wings of Eagles to take the win.

It was the Anvil who set the early gallop, with Douglas Macarthur and Taj Mahal following closely behind in the chasing pack.

Ridden by Seamie Heffernan, Capri began making inroads on the lead, as Craskman and Wings of Eagles applied some pressure.

But it was Capri who had the deeper resolve in the end, as Heffernan raced to a third win in the race, while it was a 12th Irish Derby triumph for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

Speaking to Sporting Life after the race, a delighted O’Brien congratulated Heffernan on a fantastic race.

“I was always a great believer in this horse. Even after Epsom, Seamus wanted to come here and ride him.

“We know that he gets a mile and a half and we know that he’s brave. Seamus had a lovely position through the race.

“I thought Seamus gave him a brilliant ride. He paced it brilliantly. He had a target there and he knew the field was coming behind him but he timed it to perfection.
