OCI reverse decision to ban media from presidential elections

The Olympic Council of Ireland elections have traditionally been open to the press.

THE OLYMPIC COUNCIL of Ireland (OCI) has reversed its decision to ban members of the media from attending their upcoming elections.

The OCI initially issued a letter to participants last night, informing them that only individuals on the guest list would be allowed into the elections which take place in Dublin next Tuesday.

However, it appears the organisation — which is voting on a replacement for Pat Hickey as president — changed their minds overnight and members of the press will now be allowed attend the event in Dublin’s Conrad Hotel.

As well as a replacement for Hickey — who served in the role for 28 years — a new executive committee will be voted on.

Hickey is currently facing charges in Brazil of ticket touting in connection with the Rio Olympics.

There are three nominees for the role of president; acting president Willie O’Brien, Swim Ireland CEO Sarah Keane and Basketball Ireland chief executive Bernard O’Byrne.
