Shock of Gibraltar: Rodgers' Celtic go down to minnows in Champions League tie

Police officer Lee Casciaro’s strike just after half-time proved to be the match winner for the Lincoln Red Imps.

BRENDAN RODGERS’S STINT as Celtic manager has got off to the worst possible start, ending in a shock 1-0 defeat to Gibraltar champions Lincoln Red Imps.

The Scottish champions were expected to cruise through their Champions League second round qualifier first leg against the Gibraltar champs but went down 1-0 in the British territory.

The home side took the lead  on 47 minutes through Lee Casciaro, the police officer who scored Gibraltar’s first international goal against Scotland last year.

It was a scrappy effort from the striker, one that Celtic defender Efe Ambrose won’t want to see again, but it was all the hosts needed to score a famous win.

The defeat ranks as one of the famed Scottish club’s worst in history and Celtic will now have to overturn the deficit in the second leg, at Parkhead next Wednesday night, to progress to the next round of Champions League qualifying.

They will be heavy favourites to do just that in familiar surroundings, and on a grass surface, but they will have to deal with the embarrassing fallout from this defeat in the meantime.
