ROY O’DONOVAN’S STUNNING volley for the Central Coast Mariners against Adelaide United last month has been voted as the goal of the season at the A-League’s Dolan Warren Awards.
The award ends a difficult year on a high for the Cork native who received an eight-week ban for a headbutt, one of the longest A-League suspensions ever handed out, in January.
The former Cork City, Sunderland and Coventry City striker’s outstanding effort came towards the end of a 4-2 defeat in South Australia.

Left back Josh Rose was afforded plenty of space to loft a ball towards O’Donovan and some slack defending gave the 30-year-old enough room to control the delivery on his chest before smacking it into the top corner with his left foot.
His reaction may have been muted considering the circumstances but this goal is certainly one for the career scrapbook.
It was a season to forget for the sunken Mariners, finishing bottom of the table (although there is no relegation in the division) for the first time in their history, quite a fall from grace for the 2013 champions.
O’Donovan finished top scorer for the Mariners this season, his first in the A-League, finding the net on eight occasions in his 19 games, two goals fewer than Perth Glory’s Andy Keogh.
