Man City defender Martin Demichelis charged with misconduct in relation to betting

The Manchester City defender was charged by the English FA this morning.

MANCHESTER CITY DEFENDER Martin Demichelis has been charged by the English FA for “misconduct in relation to betting.”

The Argentinian international is alleged to have committed 12 breaches of FA Rule E8 concerning betting on football matches between 22 January and 28 January this year.

There is no suggestion that the charge involves the 35-year-old betting on any game he was involved in, with new rules enacted in 2014 banning players and coaches from betting on any football activity.

According to the FA rule book:

A Participant shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on

- (i) the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, a football match or competition;

- or (ii) any other matter concerning or related to football anywhere in the world, including, for example and without limitation, the transfer of players, employment of managers, team selection or disciplinary matters.

It is not known at this stage what matches the charges relates to but Demichelis has until 5 April to respond to the charge.

The former Bayern Munich and Malaga player joined his former boss Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City having been with Atletico Madrid for less than two months.

Demichelis has made 18 appearances in the Premier League this season, and was widely criticised for his performance in the recent defeat to Manchester United.
