THE MEATH COUNTY Board has recommended that Mick O’Dowd be retained as senior football manager.

The Royals endured a disappointing 2015 season, failing to gain promotion from Division II of the Allianz National Football League and losing a first ever Leinster championship game to Westmeath in a dramatic provincial semi-final.

Meath then suffered a two-point defeat to Tyrone in Round 2B of the All-Ireland Qualifiers.

Many felt O’Dowd’s future was in doubt when selector Sean Kelly confirmed he had left his role with the team.

However, at a management committee meeting last night, the board voted unanimously to nominate O’Dowd to remain in his current role until 2017 with a review following the completion of next season’s campaign.

The Skyrne man’s fate will now be decided by the county’s club delegates when they meet to vote on his re-appointment in Kilmessan on 10 August.
