HE MAY HAVE been one of the counties greatest ever hurlers, but four-time All-Star and twice All-Ireland winner Brian Whelahan has stepped down after failing to make an impact in his two years in charge of the Offaly senior hurlers.
An Allianz National Hurling League Division 1B win over 2014 All-Ireland semi-finalists Limerick was the highlight of a disappointing 2015 for the Faithful who suffered a first championship defeat to Laois since 1972 when they lost by eight points in O’Moore Park in early June.
Their All-Ireland Qualifiers campaign came to a halt before it could really begin with a 20-point trouncing at the hands of Clare in Round 1 and, while Whelahan had been given the option of staying on for a third season in the hope that 2016 might be different, the 43-year old decided to resign.
His decision makes him the first high-profile inter-county managerial casualty of the 2015 season and the Offaly County Board have set up a committee to find his replacement from inside or outside the county.
