Derry make light work of Wexford in football qualifiers

The home side took advantage of conditions in Owenbeg today.

Derry 1-16

Wexford 0-10

WEXFORD WERE UNABLE to reproduce the heroics that saw them best Down recently as Derry comfortably came out on top of today’s Round 2B Qualifier at Owenbeg.

While throw-in delayed by 10 minutes due to traffic congestion, Derry were not slow to start with scores from Eoin Bradley, Enda Lynn and Cailean O’Boyle giving them a 0-3 to 0-1 lead in the early stages; Ben Brosnan’s free into a strong breeze the sole response for Wexford.

A score from Aidan Flynn put just a point between the sides ten minutes before the break but it was the last time the visitors troubled the scoreboard in the first half… at least at the correct end.

A speculative Derry effort bounced off the bar before appearing to be turned into his own net by Brian Malone, further scores from Benny Heron and Danny Heavron giving them a seven point lead at the break; 1-8 to 0-4.

Despite having the advantage of a strong breeze in the second, Wexford were unable to close the gap and rand out comfortable nine point winners.

More to follow.
