Irish amateur Paul Dunne produces stunning round to qualify for The Open

It is his second time to qualify.

FOR THE SECOND year in a row, Irish amateur Paul Dunne has qualified for The Open after shooting nine-under par in the final qualifying tournament at Woburn Golf Club.

The Greystones golfer — who only graduated from the University of Alabama in April — finished in first place f0llowing rounds of 70 and 65.

The 22-year old’s -9 total — the exact same score he finished on when qualifying at Woburn last year — secured one of three places with Robert Dinwiddie (-6) of England and South Africa’s Retief Goosen (-5) picking up the other spots.

Among those who failed to qualify for the 144th Open at Woburn were Colin Montgomerie, Richard Green and Robert Rock.

There was also disappointment for the Irish golfers trying to make St. Andrew’s at the other three qualifying events with Kevin Phelan the most unlucky. His rounds of 70 and 71 at Ayreshire left him in a tie for fifth, one shot off a playoff place.

At the same venue, a 77 in the second round put paid to Alex Gleeson’s qualification hopes while Eamonn Brady finished in a tie for sixth at Hillside.

This year’s Open takes place between 16-19 July at St. Andrew’s.
