FBD Connacht League wrap: Roscommon upset Mayo to set up Galway decider

The Rossies held on for a five point win this afternoon.

ROSCOMMON BEAT MAYO by five points in McHale Park today to book a surprise FBD Connacht League final place.

Mayo, who came into the game knowing that even a two point loss would be enough to see them face Galway in the decider, started slowly and found themselves six points adrift in the first half – 1-5 to 0-2 – thanks to Diarmuid Murtagh’s goal for the Rossies.

However, the 2013 All-Ireland finalists rallied to trail just 1-6 to 0-6 at the break.

Once more though, John Evans’ men had the quicker start to the second half and when Mark Nally pounced for Roscommon’s second goal on 55 minutes, their lead was back up to seven.

Though Mayo narrowed the gap with an Alan Freeman penalty it would prove little more than consolation for a side that managed just two points from play all afternoon, eventually falling to a 2-10 to 1-12 defeat.

Elsewhere, Galway – who had already booked their final berth – enjoyed a facile win over GMIT in Moycullen. Leading by seven points at the break, the Tribesmen ran out 1-13 to 0-5 winners.
