A day in the Western Province academy is like the first half of 'Full Metal Jacket'

Now we know why Springbok players are so gigantic.

SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY players are generally behemoths so it is no surprise that a peak inside the Western Province’s academy shows it to be a grueling, boot camp-like experience.

The Irish academies obviously put the players through rigorous training too but when you watch this video, you can’t help but think that the South Africans are on another level in terms of size and strength.

There are a lot of tough challenges there but the best part is easily at 27 seconds when a coach is pounding a player’s abs with a medicine ball. What ever happened to a good ol’ fashioned plank when it came to developing your core?

There is definitely a Full Metal Jacket vibe from that video – in terms of training, I doubt any of their coaches are as insane as this drill sergeant.
