An Irish athlete is being awarded a European bronze medal almost 6 years after the race

Róisin McGettigan is being moved up to third in the 1500m indoor final from 2009.

WINNING A BRONZE medal for your country is usually a very proud achievement for an athlete but it must feel strange for Róisin McGettigan.

McGettigan came fourth in the 1500m final at the 2009 European Indoor Athletics Championships in Turin but is now being moved up to third place since the winner of the race, Anna Alminova of Russia, has been banned for a doping offence.

The Wicklow runner is now retired but this is still a nice accolade to receive – better late than never – and Athletics Ireland today announced that McGettigan will receive the medal at the National Athletics awards on Wednesday evening.

1500m wasn’t the only discipline that McGettigan excelled in as she also made the 3000m steeplechase final at the 2008 Olympics. She also broke Sonia O’Sullivan’s record for the fastest indoor mile in 2009.
