GAA to examine penalty rules after Waterford's tactics against Anthony Nash

Stephen O’Keeffe adopted a new approach on Sunday.

ALMOST AS SOON as Waterford goalkeeper Stephen O’Keeffe charged down Anthony Nash’s penalty in their Muster SHC replay with Cork yesterday, there was confusion over whether his actions were legal or not.

As pointed out on TheScore.ie yesterday, while it is stipulated under Rule 2.3 in football that a goalkeeper may not move off his line when defending a penalty, the same statement is not in the hurling rulebook and, as such, O’Keeffe’s actions were legal.

However, in a statement this evening, the GAA have said they will be review the situation ahead of next weekend’s games.

“Arising from concerns in relation to implementation of the Playing Rules of Hurling in respect of the taking of penalty pucks and free pucks from the 20 metres line, the Management Committee of the GAA will recommend Interpretation of Rules to Central Council to address these concerns.

“It is envisaged that this process will be completed as quickly as possible and in advance of this weekend’s games.”

Here is the O’Keeffe save for those that didn’t see it:
