Cyclist celebrates winning stage...one lap too early

The crowd tried to warn him but it was too late.

IRISH PARENTS ARE very fond of the phrase “don’t count your chickens” but it doesn’t seem to be so popular in Spain.

Eloy Teruel pumped his fists in the air as he led the peloton home in stage seven of the Tour of California and the joy on his face was clear to see.

The problem for the Spaniard was there was still a lap to go and, despite repeated efforts from his team and the crowd to warn him about his premature celebration, the unfortunate cyclist was swallowed up by the chasing pack.

Slovakia’s Peter Sagan went on to win the stage one lap later.

Teruel took to Twitter after the stage to make fun of himself, tweeting “I wanted to win, lucky nobody saw it hahaha”
