Holders Down crash out of Christy Ring Cup

There was also action in the Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher Cups today.

HOLDERS DOWN ARE out of the Christy Ring Cup after a second consecutive defeat, this time suffering a one-point reversal at the hands of Derry at Owenbeg.

Down had taken an early lead through Johnny McCusker’s goal but Oisin McConvery raised the green flag for the hosts to ensure they went into the break with a 1-9 to 1-4 lead.

The lead was seven soon after half-time when Shane Ferren also found the net but maximums from James Coyle and Danny Toner appeared to have earned Down the draw.

However, a last-gasp Kevin Hinphey point sent the 2013 winners out of the competition.

In a day of close competition, both Meath and Kildare also claimed one-point wins over Mayo and Wicklow respectively.
