AFTER SPENDING NEARLY two decades of his life in prison for a murder conviction that was twice overturned, Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter has died aged 76.

Carter died in his sleep at home in Toronto this morning according to his long time friend John Artis.

The former boxer was battling prostate cancer.

Carter earned the nickname ‘Hurricane’ thanks to his powerful punches and quick combinations and was ranked number 10 in the world by The Ring Magazine in 1963.

However, he and Artis were convicted of murdering three people in a bar in New Jersey in 1966, spending nine years in jail before the convictions were overturned.

However, both were found guilty for a second time in 1976 and spent another decade in prison before a federal judge overturned the second conviction in 1985.

Carter’s struggles were highlighted by Bob Dylan’s famous song as well as a Hollywood film and a number of books.
