Longford relegated from Division 3 after dramatic game with Wexford

There was only one place to be in Division 3 today.

Wexford 1-15

Longford 2-10

DESPITE TWO LATE goals for Longford, they will play their football in Division 4 next season after losing by two points to Wexford this afternoon.

With Cavan and Roscommon having long since sewn up promotion, and Offaly already relegated, all eyes in Division 3 were on Wexford Park in what was a winner-takes-all clash.

The sides went into the break level at eight points apiece, a result that would have been enough to secure Longford’s Division 3 status due to their superior score difference.

However, the home side kicked on in the second half and Kevin O’Grady’s maximum looked to have put the game out of Longford’s reach but Jack Sheedy’s men weren’t dead and buried just yet.

Colm Smyth and Paul Barden both scored goals in the closing minutes to narrow Wexford’s lead to two points but time just ran out for Longford.

Elsewhere in Division 3, Fermanagh and Offaly played out a high-scoring draw — sharing 38 points — while Roscommon ensured they finished the season with just one defeat thanks to a three point win over Sligo.

Division 3 results:

Cavan 0-18 v Limerick 0-14 (Sat)
Fermanagh 3-10 v Offaly 2-13
Roscommon 0-12 v Sligo 1-6
Wexford 1-15 v Longford 2-10
