WITH QUALIFICATION FOR the World Indoor Track and Field Championships in March on the line, personal bests and national records are set to be challenged in the Athlone Institute of Technology this weekend as 330 of Ireland’s top athletes will compete in the Woodies DIY National Indoor Track and Field Championship.
The Blue Riband event is expected to be the men’s 60m where the top four have personal bests separated by less than eight hundreds of a second. David Hynes (Menapians) will start as favourite after running 6.81 this season but he will have to be at his best against the likes of Steven Colvert (Crusaders), Jamie Davis (Raheny) and Keith Doherty (Tallaght).
The women’s 60m is expected to be a head-to-head battle between Amy Foster (City of Lisburn) and Joan Healy (Bandon). Both have recent form with Healy clocking 7.36 in the Intervarsity Championships last week and Foster 7.33 in the British Championships.
Other events expected to generate attention at the meet — which will be broadcast on RTÉ on Sunday from 3pm — include the women’s 60m hurldes (Sarah Lavin), men’s 1500m (David McCarthy) and the men’s shot putt which sees Colin Quirke (Crusaders) return from the US to best his 2013 mark of 17.14m.
