Wenger in the spotlight as former Arsenal favourites wade into debate on club's future

The Gunners boss is a ‘dictator’ says one ex-player.

ARSENAL LEGEND Ian Wright has labelled the club’s loss to Bradford in the League Cup as the most humiliating of Arsene Wenger’s reign.

The north London side lost 3-2 on penalties after Santi Cazorla’s spot-kick was saved and Marouane Chamakh and Thomas Vermaelen both hit the post.

“I think (it is the most humiliating loss), yes, because it’s one of those where I think he’s finally realised that he has to put out a team that’s strong enough to try and win this competition,” Wright said on Absolute Radio’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Football.

“There’s no way I’m going to sit here and say I didn’t expect us to beat Bradford, but the team that we can put out, the team that we did put out, with the right attitude, are supposed to beat Bradford.”

Wright believes there are major problems at Arsenal, but would not like to see the French manager, who’s been at the club for 16 years, axed.

“You’ve got to look at Arsene Wenger and everything that’s going wrong, there are major problems,” Wright said. ”I think that he should be worried about his future, but at the same time if he wasn’t worried about his future he wouldn’t be human. The fact is something’s got to give, the fans are livid.

“I wouldn’t like to see him go, I’d like to see him bring people in that he’s going to listen to.”

Another former club star, Stewart Robson, also hit out at Wenger, claiming he is a ‘dictator’ who does not understand the game. In an astonishing rant, Robson criticised Wenger for his behaviour on the touchline during matches, his apparent lack of tactical awareness and his general running of the club in recent years.

“I am embarrassed with the way Arsene Wenger conducts himself these days. He doesn’t give any information to players on the field. He doesn’t do any tactical stuff and I’m told he doesn’t do much training either, yet he’ll happily have a rant at everyone else,” Robson told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show.

“There are good backroom staff at Arsenal, Steve Bould, Neil Banfield, Terry Burton – all top football people – but they can’t challenge him because Wenger is a dictator.”

Robson continued: “Arsene Wenger doesn’t see the danger, he doesn’t read the game. When things are going wrong and the team are making mistakes, he doesn’t rectify them and the reason he doesn’t is because he doesn’t know what the mistakes are.

“In my view it was time up for him three or four years ago. The fans have stuck by him, they always say ‘In Arsene We Trust’ but I don’t think that can be the case anymore. Tactically Arsenal are all over the place, they are under-prepared defensively, and he doesn’t understand the game well enough. If you have that combination, you will always lose several football games.”

Robson said that a new manager could change the direction of the club.

“Arsenal have good players. Good but not great. With a better manager the team would be much improved,” he said. ”There are so many easy things they can rectify and if they did that they would have a much better chance of winning things, but having Wenger in charge doesn’t let them do that.”
