Elding brace inspires Sligo to win over Drogheda

The race for second place is set to go down to the last day following tonight’s result.

ANTHONY ELDING SCORED twice as Sligo beat Drogheda 3-1 at the Showgrounds this evening.

Ian Baraclough’s men went ahead after 38 minutes, when Elding’s powerful strike from the edge of the area beat Gabriel Sava.

A Shane Grimes handball in the box early in the second half subsequently enabled the hosts to go two-up, as Elding scored his second of the night from the penalty spot.

Evan McMillan added a third with just under 20 minutes remaining, heading home Ross Gaynor’s corner, as Sligo effectively ended the game as a contest.

Gavin Brennan then grabbed a consolation for Drogheda in the final minute, converting another spot kick, after Gavin Peers had impeded Declan O’Brien.

The result means that the race for second place will now go to the last day of the season, with Sligo still requiring Bray Wanderers to do them a favour against Dundalk next week, while also needing a victory in their final game against Shamrock Rovers.
