IRELAND’S ANDY LEE will fight Billy Joe Saunders of England for the world title in Thomond Park on 19 Septmeber, it has been confirmed.

There had been much speculation about the location of world champion Lee’s fight, with reports previously suggesting the home of Munster Rugby would be the likely destination for the bout.

However, a statement released by Queensberry Promotions originally claimed the Thomond Park reports were incorrect.

Lee subsequently tweeted the news today, however, confirming: “I’m fighting @bjsaunders_ Sept 19th in @thomondstadium @WorldBoxingOrg  championship of the world. Thank you  @boxingbooth @frankwarren_tv”

The 31-year-old fighter had originally been expected to make his first title defence in New York, but opponent Peter Qullin failed to make the weight on the eve of their fight, ensuring the title was ultimately not on the line for the encounter.
