DUBLIN COUNTY BOARD chairman Andy Kettle died on Tuesday evening following an illness. He was 68.

The former Fingal Ravens chairman held the position since December 2010 — during which time the county won two All-Ireland senior football championships and the senior hurlers claimed a Leinster title under Anthony Daly.

He was returned unopposed for a fifth year by the Dublin County Board on Monday, the evening before he died.

Dublin football manager Jim Gavin led the tributes to Kettle and told RTÉ: ”If one was going to battle, Andy Kettle was somebody you would have on your side.”

Ravens remembered a loyal clubman who “was equally happy either at an U8 game in Rolestown or in Croke Park on All-Ireland day.

“We have lost a gentleman and a friend,” the northside club said in a short statement.

“To Phyllis, Patrick, Peter, Eoin, Niamh, Orla & Ciara we offer our deepest sympathies to you at this time.”

GAA President Liam O’Neill said: “The sad passing of Andy has shocked us all. He was an extremely popular figure within the wider GAA family but of course was particularly active

“His warm, friendly, inclusive demeanor struck a chord with people and drew people easily to his company.

His infectious enthusiasm could be seen on match days at Croke Park but of course much of his sterling work was overseen away from the glare down through the various other ranks of Gaelic games in the capital city.

“His presence and contribution at national level as a member of our Management Committee and a Central Council delegate will also be sorely missed and I extend the heartfelt condolences of the entire GAA community to his family, his wide circle of friends and his club, Fingal Ravens, at this difficult time.”

Tributes from across the GAA community were paid to Kettle on Twitter.
