Villas-Boas was appointed manager in March 2014, following the departure of Italian Luciano Spalletti, and claimed the Russian Premier League title in his first full season in charge, as well as taking Zenit to the semi-final of the Europa League.
However, the Portuguese boss has had a controversial tenure in Russia, grwoing unhappy with the league’s limitations on foreign players, and had previously claimed he was ready to quit the club at the end of last season, before being convinced to stay.
And after picking up a six-match ban for pushing an official earlier this month, the manager has decided that this season in Russia will be his last.
“Talking about a contract extension…the club had made me an offer at the end of last season, I have refused and at the end of the season I will leave the club,” Villas-Boas said.
“But in any case we will continue to work hard, we need to score points, to catch up with those ahead of us, to try to perform successfully in the Champions League.”
Zenit are currently third in the table after seven rounds of games in the Russian Premier League, and have been drawn in Group H of the Champions League, alongside Valencia, Lyon and French side Gent.
