The pre-match chatter before the Allianz Hurling League clash in Thurles on Saturday night focused on the managers, Liam Cahill coming up against his former Waterford charges, Davy Fitzgerald plotting against Tipperary once more. Tipperary were aiming to end a sequence of defeats at the hands of the Deise and Jake Morris did much to power them to that victory.
The Nenagh Éire Óg man only scored three times but all three strikes were critical, coming together to form the first hat-trick of his inter-county career. That input cast him as Tipperary’s hat-trick hero in their ten-point success.
Cork’s comeback
A fourth win on the spin for Cork may not have been a surprise but the pattern of yesterday’s game against Wexford had made the outcome difficult to forecast. Cork trailed for 69 minutes of this game, they didn’t score in the opening 20 minutes and failed to register from play until the 25th minute.
And yet Pat Ryan saw his team still find a way to win. Padraig Power’s opportunist second-half goal helped their cause, Jack O’Connor knocked over the late point that brought them level and Cormac Beausang bundled home the injury-time goal that won this game. A semi-final spot beckons.

Limerick’s returning stars
The All-Ireland kingpins rolled into town in Mullingar yesterday and departed with a 12-point success in their Division 1 encounter in the Allianz Hurling League. John Kiely will have been pleased with the outcome for his Limerick team, but of far greater importance was the gametime he got into star names.
Diarmaid Byrnes started and scored 0-2, his Patrickswell club-mate Aaron Gillane came off the bench to hit a point. Their abilities are added once more to an already potent mix. The champions continue to set the standard ahead of the championship throw-in.
Galway’s response
First night out in the Allianz Hurling League saw Galway defeat Wexford away from home by eight points. After that they lost out at home to Cork and Limerick, Salthill proving a happy hunting grounds for away teams. But when Galway hit the road again on Sunday, it proved a fruitful trip to Ennis.
Henry Shefflin saw his team fashion a notable success, rebounding after they had trailed by seven points early on and ultimately delivering a positive response to their last two reversals in Pearse Stadium. Evan Niland and Conor Cooney were the chief point-takers, Conor Whelan pounced for the only goal of the game, and Shefflin will have been pleased as they now move forward.
Away from the top tier, there was significant developments in Division 2A of the Allianz Hurling League on Saturday. Kildare and Offaly both held their nerve to maintain their 100% records, the Lilywhites saw off Kerry by five points and the Faithful had seven to spare over Carlow.
Now they are on a collision course next Sunday afternoon, when they meet in Tullamore. The winners will advance to the divisional final, the losers must faced the third-placed team in a semi-final. The overall prize on offer is a glittering one, the pursuit of Division 1 hurling next season.
