Italian football legend Alessandro Nesta confirms his retirement

The former AC Milan defender is now thought to be in line to become the new coach of Montreal Impact.

DEFENSIVE LEGEND ALESSANDRO Nesta has confirmed his retirement.

The former Italy international said on Twitter: “Today is my first day as an ex-footballer. Thanks to all the people who in recent years has given me their affection.#SerieA #Milan #Lazio.”

In a press conference during the week, he added:

“I’m very happy because my body is tired,” Nesta told reporters. “I think it’s time to finish.

“20 years at a high level — I was lucky. I won a lot of trophies. And this is the perfect time to say ‘stop.’ I’ll start a new life with my family, another job. I don’t know.”

Meanwhile, rumours suggest Nesta is now set to become the head coach of  Montreal Impact.

He retires having won a World Cup, three Scudetti, two Champions Leagues, a Club World Cup, three Coppa Italia trophies, a Cup Winners’ Cup, three European Super Cups, four Italian Super Cups and the Canadian Championship.
