Corkman Alan Kelly named MLS Referee of the Year for second consecutive season

Kelly was the clear winner with 63% of the vote.

FORMER LEAGUE OF Ireland official Alan Kelly has once again been named the best referee in MLS.

The Cork native, who also claimed the award in 2015, took 63% of the vote, well clear of Jair Marrufo in second on 22%. The winners of the annual awards are decided by members of the media, as well as MLS players and management.

Kelly took charge of 23 matches during his third season in the United States, more than any other referee in the league.

The 41-year-old is vastly experienced in the game, and was previously a Uefa official, where he officiated in the Champions League and World Cup qualifiers.
