SLIGO ROVERS GOT their league campaign off to a great start with a 1-0 win over Derry City at the Brandywell.
Ian Baraclough’s side scored the only goal of the game through recent signing Anthony Elding – making his Airtricity League debut on the night. The English striker latched onto Rafael Cretaro’s cross to beat Ger Doherty in the Candystripes goal on 31 minutes.
Derry improved in the second half but it was David Cawley who came closest to scoring next when the midfielder struck the bar from 20 yards out and the Bit O’Red saw out the closing minutes to earn three points.
Stephen Kenny welcomed his former club to the home of his new one as Shamrock Rovers visited Oriel Park.
2,598 turned out in Louth and it was Dundalk who were edging it when Dane Massey brought down Billy Dennehy inside the box on 67 minutes. Karl Sheppard stepped up but was denied by Peter Cherrie from the spot.
Massey was shown a second yellow and subsequent red when he fouled Sheppard in injury time but Ronan Finn couldn’t take advantage with the resulting free-kick and it finished scoreless.
