Airtricity League wrap: Sligo march on while Bohs win in Tallaght

There were also victories for St Pat’s, Cork and Drogheda in the Premier Division tonight.

CHAMPIONS-ELECT SLIGO Rovers recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over bottom side Dundalk at the Showgrounds tonight.

The Bit O’Red didn’t need to get out of second gear as they saw off their opponents thanks to goals from Mark Quigley, Gavin Peers and Liam Buchanan.

With just ten minutes on the clock, Quigley flicked on for Lee Lynch, who completed the one-two before the striker fired past Peter Cherrie into the bottom corner.

In front of 3,265, the home side doubled their lead four minutes into the second half through Peers. The centre-half found a couple of yards of space to convert Ross Gaynor’s cross for his fifth goal of the season.

Substitute Liam Buchanan wrapped things up in the final moments. Cherrie punched a Joseph Ndo corner into the air and and the forward was on-hand to finish when it fell at his feet.

Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians met in a Dublin derby in Tallaght and it was the northsiders who got one over on their fierce rivals with Kevin Devaney’s strike on the stroke of half-time proving the difference.

The Hoops had been unable to find the back of the net after creating several chances in the opening 45 minutes when Bohs were awarded a free-kick. Their defence failed to clear Keith Ward’s delivery and Devaney, who only made his debut for the club last week, poked the ball beyond Oscar Jansson.

Aaron Callaghan’s side held out for a valuable victory and the result sees defending champions Rovers fall 13 points behind Sligo.

Second-placed Drogheda United came from behind to defeat Derry City 2-1 on home soil.

Defender Alan McNally brought David McDaid down in the box just two minutes into the match and referee Alan Kelly brandished a yellow card before pointing to the spot.  McDaid theb brushed himself off to dispatch from 12 yards.

Drogheda were awarded a spot-kick of their own on 25 minutes – Shane McEleney fouling Ryan Brennan after a good ball in from Brian Gannon. Striker Fabio O’Brien has been superb in front of goal this season and duly levelled the scores up.

Before half-time, McNally made up for his early mistake by scoring what turned out to be the winner.

Second half goals from Christy Fagan and Vinny Faherty handed St Pat’s a 2-0 win away to Shelbourne while Cork City overcame Bray Wanderers by the same scoreline at Turner’s Cross – Scottish forward Keigan Parker and defender Gavin Kavanagh were both on target for the Leesiders.

Results:

  • Cork City 2-0 Bray Wanderers
  • Drogheda United 2-1 Derry City
  • Sligo Rovers 3-0 Dundalk
  • Shamrock Rovers 0-1 Bohemians
  • Shelbourne 0-2 St Patrick’s Athletic
