Airtricity League wrap: Rovers and Shels in stalemate, Derry overcome Cork

Meanwhile, Drogheda beat Bray Wanderers 2-1.

THERE WERE VICTORIES today for Drogheda and Derry in the Airtricity League, while Shamrock Rovers’ game with Shelbourne ended in a stalemate.

A last-minute Rory Patterson goal from the penalty spot helped Derry triumph 1-0 against Cork, after Adam Rundle was penalised for a handball in the box.

The victory takes Derry to second in the league on seven points, five behind leaders Sligo Rovers.

Elsewhere, Drogheda beat Bray Wanderers 2-1 at Hunky Dorys Park.

It seemed to all be going the away side’s way after the first half, with Jason Byrne‘s powerful strike giving them the lead on 15 minutes, before Declan O’Brien missed a penalty for the hosts.

However, Drogheda recovered in the second period, with goals from an Eric Foley free-kick and a Ryan Brennan header proving to be the difference between the sides.

Meanwhile, Shelbourne drew 0-0 with Shamrock Rovers at Tolka Park.

It could have been a different story however, with both sides wasting chances, and Niall Burdon in particular pulling off some good saves.
