Airtricity League: Dundalk go top after hitting Drogheda with late blow

Bray, meanwhile, drew little comfort in relegation battle with UCD.

Dundalk 1 — 0 Drogheda

Stephen Kenny’s Dundalk struggled to break down a stubborn Drogheda defence at Oriel Park but snatched a late winner through Stephen O’Donnell. They are now level on points with St Patrick’s Athletic at the top of the league.

Both sides launched into a feisty contest in the opening minutes but play slowed after Alan McNally and Patrick Hoban clashed heads and needed treatment. Chances of note in the opening 45 minutes came from a Richie Towell chip and a Shane Grimes effort that drew a save from Peter Cherrie in the Dundalk goal.

Cherrie was called into action on 57 minutes when he tipped a header over the bar but the remainder of the second-half was all about the home side’s efforts to break the deadlock. Hoban and Darren Meenan went close before the pressure finally paid off. McNally was caught in possession, by O’Donnell, just outside his box. The midfielder calmly slotted home to sent the home fans into raptures.

Bray 1 — 1 UCD

BRAY AND UCD played out a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon a result that leaves the Wicklow side just one point clear of Shelbourne at the foot of the table, having played a game more.

Cillian Morrison opened the scoring for the visitors after Barry McCabe’s quick free kick caught the Bray defence sleeping on 22 minutes.

Bray were level ten minutes before half time with Jason Byrne slotting home from close range after Marty Walters had skipped past Hugh Douglas and picked out the veteran striker with a perfect pass.

Bray took the game to UCD for the rest of the afternoon but UCD always looked threatening on the counter-attack and very nearly won it in the last minute but Robbie Benson fired over from the edge of the area.

It’s a frustrating result for Bray, especially after Bohemians’ loss to Sligo yesterday left them in position to leapfrog the Dublin side at the bottom of the league.
