ST PATRICK’S ATHLETIC are one step closer to winning their first Airtricity League Premier Division title in 14 years thanks to a 2-0 victory over Dundalk.
The pair went into the top-of-the-table clash at Richmond Park level on points with six games remaining but goals from Chris Forrester and Daryl Kavanagh were enough to see off the visiting Lilywhites.
Forrester headed home from Ger O’Brien’s cross on 51 minutes after Killian Brennan had taken a clever free-kick. Pat’s then doubled their lead shortly afterwards through man-of-the-match Daryl Kavanagh – the attacker controlling a cross brilliantly before firing past Peter Cherrie into the top corner.
Dundalk went down to 10 men with 15 minutes remaining when captain Stephen O’Donnell shoved O’Brien in front of referee Tomas Connolly and was shown a straight red card.

Speaking to RTÉ at the final whistle, Kavanagh said: “I was happy with the goal. The three points were what we were looking for going into the game and we got them.”
Third-placed Sligo Rovers were convincing in their 3-0 victory over UCD at the Belfield Bowl. The sides went in scoreless at the break but, on 50 minutes, Kieran Djilali brilliantly volleyed past Ger Barron from 20 yards out.
Joseph Ndo, playing in his 100th league appearance for the Bit O’Red, doubled their advantage directly from a corner and Danny North capped off a productive night for Ian Baraclough’s men seconds before the clock reached 90 minutes.
At the opposite end of the table, Bohemians picked up three crucial points in the relegation scrap.
With Owen Heary taking charge for the last time and new boss Bobby Browne sitting on the bench, the visitors went in front through Dinny Corcoran early on and Ryan McEvory and Dave Mulcahy added two more after the interval.
At the Brandywell, goals from David McDaid and Michael Rafter were enough for Derry to overcome Bray Wanderers.
In the First Division, there were wins for leaders Athlone, Waterford and Mervue United.
