AS WELL AS the honour, glory and all-important bragging rights the 2014 Airtricity League Premier Division champions will receive a top prize of €100,000.

The new season gets underway next Friday night and at the official launch in the Aviva Stadium today, league officials confirmed that the total prize fund will remain the same as in 2013.

That means that the 12 Premier Division clubs will compete for a total pot of €241,500, a far cry from the €700,000 on offer in the top flight as recently as the 2010 season.

€74,000 is at stake for the eight clubs in the First Division while the prize fund for the 2014 EA Sports Cup, which begins on 10 March, will be €25,000.

The league has been rebranded as the SSE Airtricity League this season in line with the title sponsor’s name change.

This is the energy company’s fifth year sponsoring the League of Ireland.
