First division wrap: Rovers, Shels and Wexford all rack up wins

Longford’s lead at the top cut to three points but they’re not involved until tomorrow evening.

THE EAST OF THE COUNTRY dominated proceedings in the SSE Airtricity League First Division earlier tonight.

Waterford United 0

Shamrock Rovers B 2

At the Regional Sports Centre in Waterford, the hosts were beaten 2-0 by Shamrock Rovers B.

Though the home side held out for the majority of the game, they conceded after 76 minutes when Cian Kavanagh gave the Dubliners the lead. Daniel Purdy made sure of the three points when he grabbed a second deep into injury time.

The result ensures the Hoops stay in seventh place in the table but close the gap on the Suirsiders to five points.

Shelbourne 2

Cobh Ramblers 0

At Tolka Park, Shels got the better of Cobh Rambers with the game effectively over after just 16 minutes.

Less than sixty seconds were gone when Sean Russell gave the hosts the lead before Conor Murphy added another later in the half.

It was an important victory for Shels – the three points moves them within touching distance of table-toppers Longford – they have a home clash with Finn Harps tomorrow night.

Wexford Youths 2

Galway FC 1

Wexford jumped above the Tribesmen to claim third spot in the table after an entertaining affair at Ferrycarrig Park.

It was still deadlocked at the break but the game sprang to life after 58 minutes when Danny Furlong gave Wexford the lead. Three minutes later, they doubled their advantage when Killian Cantwell scored a second.

But, Galway ensured a frantic finale when Jake Keegan pulled one back with just under twenty minutes to go. Ultimately though, they couldn’t find a level and the hosts held on to claim all three points.
