Airtricity League First Division wrap: Shels get their first win in five as Galway stumble

Second placed Galway suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Longford Town.

Shelbourne 3-0 Wexford Youths

10-MAN SHELBOURNE overcame a tricky tie at home to Wexford Youths thanks to three first half goals in Tolka Park this evening.

Dylan Connolly opened the scoring for the home side after just four minutes, finishing sublimely after a jinking run took him past three Wexford defenders.

The First Division leaders’ lead was doubled in the 32nd minute when Jake Donnelly played the whistle to score while his team-mates were looking for a foul on Connolly.

William McDonagh scored on a retaken penalty before the break to secure all three points in a game that saw both teams finish with 10 men following the dismissal of CJ Browne and Lee Murthagh after picking up second yellow cards.

Galway FC 0-3 Longford Town

Longford Town leapfrogged Galway into second place in the division with a 3-0 win in Eamonn Deacy Park.

First half goals from Don Cowan and Mark Salmon had the visitors well in control at the break before Gary Shaw’s strike against the run of play secured the points in the 60th minute.

In the night’s other game, Finn Harps beat Waterford United 1-0 thanks to a second half Ruairi Keating goal.
